Jesus Lovers & Biker Dudes

The movie theater was completely packed with people waiting to see the premiere of “The Passion of the Christ”…EXCEPT…for one open seat located directly beside me. I remember thinking how odd it was that every single seat in the theater was occupied save this one lonely seat beside me. Then, I saw him coming down the aisle…long hair down his back, piercings, tattoos, rough looking…and he was coming to take the one seat that was left in the theater. Of course it had to be beside of me. My judgmental nature immediately reared its ugly head as I thought to myself that the excitement of seeing this reverent movie was going to be completely ruined because this “dude” was going to be laughing, rude, making loud comments, or possibly making fun of the story of the crucifixion. Too late! He sat down right beside of me.

Then it happened. He leaned over toward me and whispered, “I sure do love Jesus. Do you love him, too?” Whew! Talk about total conviction of the heart within seconds! He and I began to talk a little before the movie began and I realized how very wrong I was about this man. He loved the Lord, he lived for the Lord, and he was beyond excited to see the story of the Savior that completely changed his life, on screen.

The movie started and at one point, he leaned toward me again and asked if I had an extra Kleenex. Why? As the scene of Jesus being brutally whipped, beaten, and nailed to the cross began to play out, he began to sob. There we both sat, sobbing, sharing Kleenex, and bonding together over the One who had come to live within our hearts and change our lives. Yes, the middle aged mom of two and the colorful biker dude shared life together for those two hours. Those two hours also taught me one of the most valuable lessons of my life. They convicted me and humbled me. And most importantly, taught me, yet again, to never judge one by what they look like on the outside. Jesus lovers come in all kinds of shapes, colors, and personalities. Look closely…it may be the person you least expect. Even a rough looking biker dude!
